Antique American Watch Co. Pocket Watch – ca. 1870s
A fine antique pocket watch made by the American Watch Co. (Waltham, Mass.), one of the earliest and most respected American watchmakers. The case is marked “Newport” and numbered inside, typical for coin silver cases of the period.
The dial is white enamel with Roman numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. Black Roman numeral markers remain clear and legible. The elegant blued steel hands add character to the piece.
The movement is a gilt finish key-wound lever escapement, signed American Watch Co. The watch winds with the included key and ticks, though it is somewhat stiff to wind – consistent with its age. It has not been serviced and is sold as-is.
