Impressive and unusually large Japanese glass fishing float dating to the 1910s. These floats were used on commercial deep sea nets and longlines to provide buoyancy. Japan was one of the leading producers of glass floats in the early 20th century, supplying large ocean fisheries.
This example represents a true large “sea float” and is significantly bigger than the decorative floats commonly found today. The glass is thick and hand blown, showing natural air bubbles and irregularities consistent with early production. The deep green color typically results from recycled glass, often repurposed bottles. The original hand knotted hemp net remains intact and displays honest maritime wear and age.
With a diameter of approximately 37 cm (14.57 in), this is a rare oversized model. Most surviving floats measure only 10–15 cm. The modern soda bottle shown in one image is included strictly for size comparison and is not part of the listing.
