A traditional Norwegian carved wooden drinking tankard dated to the early 1800s, though some specialists attribute comparable examples to the late 1700s. This is a classic example of rural Scandinavian folk art, combining functional craftsmanship with symbolic and decorative carving.

Constructed using traditional stave (lagged) technique, the vessel is formed from vertical wooden staves held securely by fitted bands. This method mirrors the construction of historic buckets and barrels. Such tankards were used for serving ale at weddings, seasonal gatherings, and festive occasions, and often held both practical and symbolic value within Norwegian farm culture.

The decoration is executed with a steady and confident hand. The domed lid is layered with carved circular bands and repeating geometric ornament. A carved bird finial crowns the top and functions as a thumb lift. The handle is richly sculpted with scroll forms and carved detail, indicating quality workmanship. Along the body, traces of faded decorative surface work remain visible. Inside the lid is a hand carved radial symbol, traditionally intended as a protective motif.

The tankard was found in partially damaged condition and has been carefully stabilized. The lid has been professionally repaired and reattached after historic cracking. Several original elements have been preserved and secured to maintain structural integrity. The restoration has been performed with respect for the object’s age and authenticity. Underneath, the piece is marked “4M” and “L”, likely added at a later date.
