This antique hand carved wooden pipe case dates from the late 1800s and was likely made in the Netherlands, where long-stemmed clay pipes and carved pipe cases were common. It features rich geometric folk art carvings, a warm aged patina and an L-shaped form designed to hold both the pipe stem and the pipe bowl safely during travel.
The case originally had a sliding lid, parts of which are still present, along with a small locking peg on the side. These early pipe etuis were used to protect fragile pipes in pockets or travel bags.
An old inscription “1645” appears on one side, but this is decorative and not the date of manufacture. The style, carving technique and construction are consistent with European folk work from around 1850–1900.
