Antique Norwegian Kjenge, also known as a Shanga, dated 1885. This traditional carved wooden ale or beer bowl was historically used during celebrations and ceremonial occasions such as weddings. A striking example of Norwegian folk art.
The bowl is carved from a single piece of wood and features two stylized horse head handles, a motif commonly associated with Western Norway. In Norwegian folklore, the horse symbolizes fertility and protection, with roots in ancient ritual vessels. The exterior shows painted decoration with the year 1885.
The piece shows clear age-related wear and surface patina consistent with its age. One horse head has been broken and reattached at a later time, which is visible upon inspection. The underside bears carved or scratched markings. The interior shows expected wear from use.
