Antique Norwegian mangle board, known as a mangletre, dating to the 1800s. This traditional Scandinavian household tool was used to smooth linen and cotton fabric before the introduction of electric irons, and is also a strong example of Nordic folk art.
The board is hand carved from wood and decorated with traditional chip carving (karveskurd) patterns across the surface. The handle is carved in the form of a stylized horse, a powerful symbol in Scandinavian culture representing strength, speed, and virility. The flat underside was designed to be rolled over wrapped fabric using a wooden rolling pin.
Beyond its practical use, the mangle board held cultural significance as a traditional betrothal gift. In Norwegian custom, such boards were often carved by a suitor and offered as part of courtship, with the quality of the carving reflecting skill and dedication.
The piece shows clear age-related wear, surface patina, and signs of long-term use consistent with its age. No modern alterations observed. A well-preserved and expressive example of 19th-century Scandinavian domestic craft.
