This large Scandinavian bentwood box dates to the early 1800s and represents a traditional everyday storage vessel used throughout rural Nordic life. Crafted using the bentwood technique, a single strip of wood was softened and shaped into an oval form, then secured to create a durable container.

The fitted wooden lid is held in place by two vertical wooden posts that function as spring-loaded clips, allowing the lid to be gently flexed open. The box originally served practical purposes such as storing food, grains, meats, or transporting belongings, and similar examples were also used as lunch pails or church boxes.

This example features a simple, rustic design with a deep black surface developed naturally through long use and age. It shows clear signs of wear, surface marks, and patina consistent with its long lifespan. The carrying handle is missing, as visible.

A strong and authentic piece of early Scandinavian folk art with striking presence.
