This Mid Century Norwegian porcelain wall sculpture was designed by Konrad Galaaen and produced by Porsgrund Porselænsfabrik during the 1960s–1970s. The artwork is commonly referred to as the “Princess” or “Prins” model and represents a strong example of Norwegian modernist ceramic relief art.
The stylized figure is executed in glazed porcelain using advanced studio glazing techniques developed at Porsgrund during this period. The surface displays crystal glaze effects, created through a carefully controlled firing and slow cooling process that allows crystalline structures to form within the glaze. This results in subtle sparkle, depth, and rich color variation in tones of blue, green, orange, black, and white.
The porcelain relief is mounted on a solid pine wood plaque. The ceramic element is suitable for outdoor wall display, as the glaze colors do not fade. If used outdoors, the wooden plaque should be periodically oiled to protect the wood. The work combines sculptural form, experimental glaze technology, and clean geometric design characteristic of Scandinavian Mid Century studio ceramics.
