Norwegian folk art mangle board from the 1970s, hand carved in solid wood and decorated with traditional acanthus scrollwork. The sculpted horse handle represents strength and vitality, a well known symbol in Scandinavian design.
Historically, mangle boards were used as primitive ironing tools. Linen was wrapped around a wooden dowel and pressed repeatedly with the board to smooth wrinkles. They were also carved as symbolic engagement or wedding gifts in Norwegian tradition.
