Antique Norwegian sending basket dated 1874, a traditional wooden food carrier used to transport butter, lefse or porridge to important occasions such as baptisms, weddings and funerals. These baskets were part of rural social customs and often reflected both craftsmanship and family identity.
The box has a characteristic square form with slanted sides and a fixed handle for carrying. It is richly decorated with hand painted rosemaling, a folk art style that flourished in Norwegian valleys during the 1700s and 1800s. This example features decoration both on the exterior and inside the basket, with the original owner initials KMDU painted on the front.
A strong and authentic Scandinavian folk art piece with visible age and history. Some repairs are present, as shown in the photos, consistent with its age and use.
