Early Norwegian glass fishing floats, mouth blown in a soft sea green tone and protected by original hand tied hemp netting. These floats were attached to the upper edge of fishing nets to keep them vertically suspended in the water.
One float bears the “BV” mark for Biri Glassverk (1761–1880). Marked examples from Biri are rarely found today and are considered highly desirable among collectors of maritime artifacts. Norway was the first country to produce glass fishing floats commercially in the mid 1800s, making early examples historically significant.
Engineered for harsh North Atlantic conditions, these floats were designed to withstand deep sea pressure, reportedly suitable for depths up to 1200 meters.
Today they are highly decorative objects. In Norway they are often displayed on cabin walls by the water, or placed in a zinc basin filled with water to create a reflective “water mirror” garden feature where the glass glows beautifully in the sunlight.
