Authentic Norwegian stave built ale tankard from the 1700s, clearly dated 1795 on the lid and carved with the owner’s initials “E M S.” Personal marking of drinking vessels was common in rural Norway, making this both a functional object and a personal historical artifact.
The tankard is constructed in traditional stave technique, formed from vertical wooden staves held together by carved and painted wooden bands. The exterior shows rich brown wood enhanced with green bands and black painted handle details, while the interior is painted white. The lid retains its original form and carved date.
The design is distinctly primitive — honest, bold and rooted in Norwegian folk tradition. It carries a stunning age developed patina that only more than two centuries can create. There is some natural movement and slight looseness in the wooden bands consistent with age, yet the piece remains stable and strong as a decorative object.
This is early Norwegian primitive folk art with real farmhouse romance — a piece that reflects craftsmanship, identity and rural life in the late 1700s.
