Antique Dutch silver plated repousse box produced by H. Hooijkaas of Schoonhoven, marked HH 90. The lid and all four sides are richly decorated with detailed raised village and tavern scenes inspired by 17th century Dutch master paintings in the manner of Jan Steen.
Figures are shown drinking, playing music, working and gathering in lively rustic settings. The craftsmanship is crisp and dimensional, wrapping fully around the box and creating a strong sculptural presence.
Inside, the box is wood lined with blue fabric base and retains its engraved dedication plaque reading: “I takknemlighet fra gutta på M/T Gorm 1962” (In gratitude from the crew of M/T Gorm 1962). The ship M/T Gorm was a Norwegian motor tanker built in 1952 and active in international trade during this period, adding clear maritime provenance to the piece.
