Rare dated 19th century Norwegian cow bell collar with original 1822 forged lock and 1863 engraved brass bell, an exceptional example of Scandinavian rural blacksmith craftsmanship.
An important and fully authentic Norwegian cattle collar from the early 19th century, retaining its original forged iron construction dated 1822 and brass bell engraved 1863. Such surviving complete examples with dual dating are increasingly scarce.
Beyond its agricultural function, this piece represents Norwegian mountain pastoral culture and rural blacksmith tradition, where craftsmanship and ornamentation reflected both utility and status.
Authentic 19th century Norwegian cow collar known as a klave or bjolleklave.
This impressive hand forged iron livestock collar features decorative iron elements and an original mechanical bolt lock dated 1822. Attached is a solid brass bell engraved 1863, complete with original internal clapper.
Such collars were used on cattle to locate animals on mountain pasture through sound. Decorated examples like this were often used for special occasions or as status pieces.
The craftsmanship clearly reflects rural Norwegian blacksmith tradition from the 1800s.
