A rare and historically important Scandinavian wall telephone produced by Aktieselskabet Elektrisk Bureau in Kristiania (Oslo), Norway and dated July 19, 1901 on the original internal label.
Elektrisk Bureau was founded in 1882 and became one of the key suppliers of telephone equipment during the early expansion of the Norwegian telephone network. Telephones like this were used with manual switchboards where the user turned the crank to send a signal to the operator who then connected the call.
This example represents an early magneto wall telephone from the turn of the 20th century.
The telephone features a richly decorated cast iron wall frame with twin brass bells, a hand crank magneto generator, and a decorative wooden cabinet with geometric marquetry decoration. The original handheld receiver with braided cord and metal fittings is included.
Inside the cabinet the mechanical components remain along with the original Elektrisk Bureau technical label dated 19 July 1901.
Early Scandinavian telephones from this period appear far less frequently on the collector market compared with larger European manufacturers, making surviving examples desirable among collectors of telecommunications history.
