A beautiful and authentic Norwegian tine box, crafted in traditional bentwood technique. This oval wooden container features a warm aged patina, decorative burnt patterns, and a fitted lid with a central handle. A charming example of Scandinavian folk art with both rustic appeal and historical character.
This piece dates to the 1800s and is made using the classic sveipeteknikk method, where thin wood (typically pine or spruce) is steamed and bent into shape, then stitched together. The lid is secured with upright wooden pegs (oppstave). The carved initials “E.M” reflect a common 19th century tradition of marking ownership.
Originally used for storing and transporting food such as butter, cakes, flour, or meat, tines were also used for keeping valuables or sewing items. Today, it works beautifully as a decorative storage piece, adding warmth and heritage to any interior.
