Step back into the 18th century with this extraordinary Norwegian Mangel Board (mangletre), clearly dated 1777. This is not just a decorative item, but a museum-worthy artifact that has survived nearly 250 years of history. In the traditions of Norwegian "bonderomantikk," a piece like this—bearing initials and a specific year—was often a cherished courtship gift, marking a significant moment in a family's heritage.
What makes this board so special is its honest, raw beauty. The wood remains untreated, having developed a breathtaking natural patina that only two and a half centuries of oxidation and human touch can produce. The handle is carved in a strong, primitive horse form—a traditional symbol of power and protection in Scandinavian folk culture. The prominent inscription "SAD 1777" is carved with the confident, archaic strokes typical of the late 1700s.
Please note that as a 250-year-old tool, it shows its age with pride: there is a piece of wood missing underneath the front of the horse handle. Despite this, the handle remains structurally stable and the board is perfectly suited as a striking historical display piece or centerpiece.
