Hand-crafted in rural Norway during the late 1800s, this piece showcases the incredibly iconic, masterfully executed steamed bentwood construction that has made historic Norwegian folk art famous worldwide.
The box is constructed from a single piece of wood, carefully wrapped and secured with tight traditional root lashings. The lid locks snugly into place between the hand-carved end posts using the classic tension-fit design. The exterior features its original, faded earthy red paint finish, displaying a stunning, untouched dry patina, gentle scuffs, and historical edge wear that only a century and a half of genuine household life can create.
Collector's Note: Attached to the underside of the lid is a charming, vintage clipping from an old Norwegian magazine. The clipping showcases a highly similar tine from the same regional district, adding a wonderful layer of local provenance, folklore interest, and collectors' nostalgia to this specific chest.
