In 18th century Norway, a richly decorated collar like this was never intended for ordinary farm work. It was reserved for the farm's finest horse and brought out for weddings, church journeys, winter sleigh rides, market days, and festive celebrations. As the horse traveled through the countryside, the deep tone of the bronze bell combined with the rhythmic sound of the brass leaves would announce the arrival of distinguished guests long before they appeared.
