Step back into the golden age of Norwegian folk traditions with this exceptional 19th-century wooden beer tankard, known in Norway as an Ølkrus or Stopp. Handcrafted using traditional stave construction, this beautiful vessel captures the warmth, craftsmanship, and symbolism of rural Scandinavian life, preserving its untouched natural wood patina developed through generations.
Created by a skilled rural cooper, the tankard features finely executed sviddekor (burned-iron decoration) covering virtually every visible surface. Flowing wave borders and geometric rosettes decorate the body, lid, and even the underside of the base, reflecting the remarkable attention to detail devoted to its construction. The original hinged wooden lid and hand-bound willow withes remain intact, highlighting traditional Norwegian woodworking techniques rarely seen so completely preserved.
A particularly fascinating feature is the carved Hjulkors, or Solar Cross, integrated into the base of the handle. In Norwegian folk belief, this ancient protective symbol was associated with safeguarding valuable possessions, including farmhouse ale, from the hidden spirits known as the underjordiske.
