Step back into the golden age of late 19th-century Norwegian folk art with this beautifully preserved painted wooden chest, dated 1890 on the front panel. Its warm orange surface, softly worn by time, is decorated with hand-painted folk motifs and traditional border details, giving the piece a deeply authentic rustic and primitive presence.
This antique Norwegian dome-top chest was likely used as a document trunk, keepsake chest, or small storage box for letters, textiles, papers, and personal treasures. It features an original iron carry handle mounted on the lid, historic iron strap hinges on the back, and an original front lock plate. The front is painted with the inscription “Aar 1890,” framed by charming scrollwork in white and muted green tones. The inner lock mechanism was removed long ago during the chest’s working life, allowing it to open and close easily today.
With its generous interior and honest age-worn character, this piece works beautifully as a time capsule box, memory keeper, antique storage trunk, or decorative folk art accent.
