Step back into the golden age of late 19th-century Norwegian folk art with this beautifully preserved wooden chest, dated 1890 on the front panel. Its warm orange painted surface, softly worn by time, is framed by hand-painted folk motifs and traditional decorative borders that give the piece a deeply authentic rustic presence.
This antique Norwegian document chest or small storage trunk features a classic dome-top form, an original iron carry handle mounted on the lid, and historic iron strap hinges on the back. The front is painted with the inscription “Aar 1890,” flanked by charming scrollwork details in white and muted green tones. The original lock plate remains in place, while the inner locking mechanism was removed long ago during the chest’s working life, allowing it to be used easily for everyday storage.
Its generous interior and sturdy construction make it ideal for storing letters, documents, textiles, keepsakes, or treasured small objects, while its visual appeal makes it equally strong as a decorative statement in a Scandinavian, farmhouse, or primitive interior. The naturally aged paint, honest wear, and untouched interior wood all add to its collectible character.
