A fascinating early 1950s Technofix wind up track toy, combining colorful postwar German tinplate design with an imaginative transportation theme and a distinctive looping mechanical layout.
The toy is clearly marked “Marke Technofix” and “Made in U.S.-Zone Germany.” Technofix was the trademark associated with Gebrüder Einfalt of Nuremberg, Germany, a noted manufacturer of mechanical lithographed tin toys. The U.S.-Zone marking places this example in the immediate postwar era, and comparable Technofix mechanical track toys with this marking are documented from around 1950 and the early 1950s.
The lithography is particularly appealing, combining a busy mid-century city with buses and automobiles, a large red and yellow locomotive, an airplane, helicopter, airport imagery and architectural scenes. The long curved track creates a dramatic looping form, while the mechanical train travels along the track.
The mechanism has been tested and is operating. The train moves along the track but runs slowly and stops at certain points. The track appears to need cleaning and possibly minor adjustment or servicing for smoother operation.
