An impressive large vintage Marusan tin toy automobile from Japan, dating to the 1950s. This classic friction-drive sedan combines a pressed tin body with chrome-tone details, rubber tires and a wonderfully colorful lithographed interior.
The underside is clearly marked with the Marusan maker emblem and “Japan.” Attractive period details include a hood ornament, front grille and bumper, headlights, rear lights, colorful emblems, rear license plate marked “2203,” and decorative wheel hubs with red centers.
One of the most appealing features is the surviving interior. Through the open side windows you can see striped lithographed seats and a detailed printed dashboard with gauges and controls.
This example has been well played with and should be considered a restoration project or an authentic unrestored display piece rather than a mint collectible. There are numerous scratches, scuffs, paint losses, oxidation, surface wear, discoloration and general signs of age and use. The underside shows particularly heavy scratching and age-related wear. The bumpers and other metal details also show dents, oxidation and wear.
