A beautiful piece of Norwegian rural history, this traditional round bentwood box is dated 1891 and carries the initials “M.O.D.” Its wonderfully aged surface and simple handcrafted construction give it the unmistakable character of authentic Scandinavian farmhouse antiques.
These traditional wooden containers were practical household objects and could serve a variety of purposes, including storing and carrying food, sewing supplies, small valuables and other personal belongings. Initialed and dated examples also have a particularly personal character, and pieces of this type could be given in connection with marriage or other important occasions.
Made using traditional bentwood construction, the box has a tall rounded form with a fitted wooden lid. More than 130 years of age have given the wood a stunning natural patina, with variations in color, surface wear and marks that cannot be reproduced artificially. The initials “M.O.D.” and the date 1891 add an especially appealing connection to the object's original history.
