Antique 1719 Norwegian Lion Tankard | Large Hand Carved Wood Ale Mug | Scandinavian Folk Art Museum Display Lidded Drinking Vessel

Step back into the golden age of early Scandinavian folk art with this remarkable antique Norwegian lion tankard, dated 1719. Known in Norway as a “løvekrus,” this type of lidded wooden drinking vessel is closely connected to traditional Norwegian ale, festive table culture, and historic rural craftsmanship.

This is a large and highly decorative example, hand carved in wood with a cylindrical body, domed lid, carved handle, and carved feet. The top of the lid features a sculptural dragon lion figure, while the handle includes a strong carved lion form. The body is decorated with incised border patterns, and the underside is carved with the date 1719.

The scale, age, and surviving carved details make this an unusual and museum-worthy Norwegian folk art object. It has survived more than 300 years with strong visual presence and remains stable for decorative display.
