Antique German Historismus Drinking Horn | Brass Putto Turtle Mount | Renaissance Revival Prunkhorn with Lid, Nordic Inscription Decor

Step back into the golden age of European historicist design with this striking antique German Historismus drinking horn, also known as a Prunkhorn. Dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, circa 1890–1910, this dramatic presentation piece combines polished natural horn, ornate brasswork, and Renaissance Revival symbolism.

The natural horn shows beautiful organic marbling and translucent warm tones, mounted with decorative brass fittings, a foliate tip, a rocaille style cartouche, and a removable domed brass lid with a decorative finial. The top section has a brass liner inside the cup, and the whole piece rests on a heavily cast, weighted brass pedestal for stable display.

The sculptural base is especially eye catching, with a winged putto or cherub figure seated on a turtle or dragon like creature, a classical Renaissance inspired motif often associated with allegory, celebration, and ceremonial display. Around the rim of the lid is a hand engraved Norwegian folk style inscription: “Ane Den Gambles Bukstånka,” understood as “Old Ane’s Billy Goat Horn Tankard.” This gives the piece a distinctive Nordic historical connection in addition to its Continental decorative character.

A fantastic statement piece for a cabinet of curiosities, library desk, antique bar display, Renaissance Revival interior, collector cabinet, or collection of historic ceremonial drinkware. Due to age and antique condition, this piece is recommended for decorative display rather than food or drink use.
