Vintage Konrad Galaaen Wall Sconce - 1970s Porsgrund Porcelain Sun Face, Converted Electric Lamp
$475.00
A striking and substantial Norwegian wall sconce featuring a colorful glazed porcelain relief designed by Konrad Galaaen for Porsgrund Porcelain, dating from the 1970s.
The bold design depicts a stylized sun face surrounded by vivid orange, blue, green, black and white decoration. The raised outlines and separate fields of richly colored glaze give the relief a distinctive stained-glass-like appearance associated with Galaaen’s expressive Scandinavian designs.
The porcelain relief is mounted in a heavy black iron frame with a projecting candle tray and a hanging loop on the back. Originally designed as a wall-mounted candle holder, this example was converted into an electric wall light at a later date.
Konrad Galaaen (1923–2004) was a renowned Norwegian ceramic artist and designer who worked for Porsgrund Porcelain for more than four decades. His colorful ceramic reliefs have become especially recognizable examples of Norwegian mid-century design.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with age-related patina, marks and surface wear, particularly on the iron frame and reverse. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
Important electrical safety notice:
This is a vintage electrical item, and the electrical fitting is a later conversion. For safety, I strongly recommend that all wiring, the socket, cord and plug be inspected and approved by a licensed electrician before the lamp is installed or used. Electrical requirements and standards vary between countries.
