Vintage Konrad Galaaen Ceramic Wall Relief - Porsgrund Porcelain Norwegian Mid Century Art, 1960s
$1,200.00 $1,500.00
Vintage Norwegian ceramic wall relief designed by Konrad Galaaen for Porsgrund Porcelain, dating to the 1960s.
This large and striking wall piece is composed of individually glazed ceramic sections arranged in a bold geometric composition. Two large circular forms dominate the center in vivid orange and red, surrounded by smaller square elements in red, orange, yellow, turquoise, green, cream and brown.
The relief is composed of molded ceramic elements with raised dark borders separating the individual color fields, creating an effect reminiscent of leaded glass. Thick, richly colored glazes give the surface its characteristic depth, texture and variation, with areas of fine crazing visible in some of the lighter glazes.
Konrad Galaaen was a Norwegian ceramic artist and designer who worked for Porsgrund for more than four decades. He became particularly known for decorative ceramics and sculptural wall reliefs that combined geometric forms, strong color contrasts and expressive glaze effects.
The ceramic elements are mounted on a backing board. The reverse shows natural age-related patina and has metal fittings for wall hanging.
