Antique Norwegian Bentwood Tine Box - 1800s Viksdal Rosemaling Folk Art from Sunnfjord
$675.00
Antique Norwegian bentwood tine box, or laup, dating to the 1800s and decorated in the traditional Viksdal style of rosemaling from the Sunnfjord region of Norway.
This is a wonderful example of traditional Norwegian folk craftsmanship. The box is made using classic bentwood construction, where a thin strip of wood is steamed and shaped into an oval form, then secured with traditional wooden joinery. The tall side posts are characteristic of Norwegian tine boxes and originally helped secure the lid in place.
The painted decoration is strongly associated with Viksdalsmaling, a regional folk-art tradition from Sunnfjord. The warm red-orange ground is decorated with rhythmic black, white and blue curves, spirals and S-shaped strokes, giving the piece a bold but wonderfully rustic appearance.
Tine boxes were traditionally used in Norway for storing and transporting food and household goods, including butter, cheese and food for special occasions.
