A richly detailed Norwegian knife and sheath from the 1960s, combining an A. Ellefsen blade, a warm burl birch handle, and gilt 830 silver fittings. Horse motifs and deeply carved leatherwork give this piece a distinctive equestrian character.
A sculpted horse head crowns the handle, while another horse head decorates the sheath’s upper fitting. A horseshoe adorns the pointed lower fitting, finished with a small rounded terminal. Silver-colored details stand out against the warm gilded surfaces, complementing the figured birch and dark brown leather.
The sheath is hand-carved with flowing Nordic foliage ornament, with fine incised details and a patterned border. The handle fittings feature narrow decorative bands that frame the wood grain.
Maker and Marks
The blade is clearly stamped A. ELLEFSEN. The silver fittings bear 830S fineness marks, identifying 830-grade silver rather than sterling silver. A separate circular maker’s monogram is also present on the fittings. The silverwork is attributed to Kjell Lyder Bang; this attribution has not been independently verified.
